OUR PLANET _REDUCE_REUSE_RECYCLE

OUR PLANET

Our Planet is in great danger. For the last one hundred years or so, the people on the earth have wasted and misused the natural resources of the earth several plans have been developed to stop the abuse of earth environmental problems have become so complex, that many individuals feel they can have no effect on them. Problems like oil spills, hazardous waste, loss of rain forests, endangered species, acid rain, depletion of the ozone layer and the municipal waste crisis can go out of our control. All these problems require good and corporate action or government intervention. However there are some things we as individuals can control. Our waste reduction and recycling activities can make a difference.
There are some household items that are dangerous if they are just thrown away with the regular garbage. These items can damage the environment and injure plant and animal life. Some of these include aerosol cans, spot removers, fluorescent light bulbs, shoe polish etc.
A compost bin may be set in your yard. Compost bins return plant and some food material to the soil, through decomposition so it can be used as a natural soil addictive, called compost. Compost improves soil texture, increase the ability of the soil to absorb oxygen and water. Composite reduces the need to add chemicals to plants which are harmful to the environment.
Keeping recycle bins in the kitchen may also help to stop people from accidently throwing into the trash an item that could have been recycled. Some recyclable items include glass and paper. Once these bins are full of recyclable materials they can be given to your local recycle centre.
Solar panels are a series of mirrors that transform sunlight into solar energy. Solar energy can help heat water and power home appliances. Solar energy is a great source of clean non-polluting energy.
By taking school buses to school instead of individual  vehicles, students can not only save fuel but also try to invest in electronic  vehicles, which do not pollute. People should make sure to keep maintenance up on their vehicles to prevent unnecessary toxins from entering the environment.
The idea of landfill is a great one: but it won’t work if people continue to believe it is a place for all trash. A landfill is a deep big hole dug out of the earth to fill garbage. We need to make sure we don’t put chemicals and non-biodegradable substance into these landfills because they are harmful to plants and animals. They may also contaminate our drinking water. A few of these chemicals include antifreeze, insecticides, batteries and Styrofoam.
You can save natural resources  by taking your old belongings that are no longer needed to a second hand store or the salvation army. A  second hand store is a place where people can purchase donated items at a cheaper price. The salvation Army is like  a second hand store but the items are free. Most of the items found  in these stores are clothes. The benefit of such stores is that when people find what they need at a cheaper rate fewer items are manufactured which means you are saving natural resources.
We have been trying everything in our power to conserve energy and natural resources. Many plans have been developed. The problem with these plans is that most people believe that recycling is a waste of time and thereby cannot make difference. However it is important that we don’t quit. Everyone in every home should decide to do their part and help to keep our air clean, or water unpolluted and our wild life safe. The earth is our home and we need to protect it.

TEACHERS’ DAY CELEBRATED AT ST.THOMAS GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL

TEACHERS’ DAY CELEBRATED AT ST.THOMAS GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL

ST THOMAS GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL ALDONA ON TEACHERS DAY CELEBRATION

Teachers are our second parents and “Teachers Day” is The day when we, their students, get our one chance to show them how much we love them and acknowledge every small thing they do for us. So we, the cabinet, took it upon ourselves to make this day a memorable one.

The preparations began well in advance, the cabinet and our principal chalked out a programme which we hoped would bring joy and laughter to one and all. As much as we tried to keep our plans a secret the teachers must have guessed what was afoot considering the bulky packages we carried and number of  musical strains that could not be contained. Everyone enthusiastically did the jobs they were assigned.

THE MORNING OF TEACHERS DAY

The air was filled with excitement, Joy as well as worries about whether things would go as planned. Every student took pleasure in dressing up in their costumes and putting on makeup as they awaited their turn to perform and the teachers were filled with anticipation as they waited to see what was in store for them.

THE PROGRAMME

As is traditional at Carmel, we began with a Prayer service, in which we thanked the Lord for the amazing gift of our teachers.

You could see the happiness on our teachers faces as their fifth standard babies sang in the most adorable way. The dances took everyone, including us to a whole new level, using different and unique dance styles, choreographed by some of our schools best dancers.

The 7th std students with their play ‘Witty answers’ had the staff members laughing away. The 10th std play summarized the importance of a teacher and how God saw to every detail to mould a teacher and make her whole. And the programme ended on a high note with a fabulous slide show depicting our teachers at their best. It was highly appreciated by both, the staff and the students!
THE AFTERPARTY-The PTA along with the cabinet had planned a small party for our dear teachers. We had games and snacks. It was a pleasant surprise when we discovered that teachers certainly do have the fun factor in them. It was a lovely day indeed.

MY PLANET EARTH

MY PLANET EARTH

Planet Earth is one from 8th planets. It is slightly flattened at the poles and bulges in the middle. The earth has just one satellite the MOON. The moon takes light from the sun during the day and gives us light during the night. There are seven continents in the world. They are Asia, North America, Africa, Australia, Europe, South America, Antarctica. The earth is covered with water and 29 % of the earth is surrounded by a layer of gas called the atmosphere. This thin blanket of air is an integral and important aspect of the planet. It provides us with the air we breathe and protects us from the harmful effects of the sun’s rays.

The surface of the earth is not the same everywhere the earth has an infinite variety of landforms. Broadly we can group different landforms depending on elevation and slope as mountains plateaus and plains. A mountains is any natural elevation of the earth’s surfaces. The mountains may have a small summit and a broad base. It is considerably higher than the surrounding area. Some mountains are even higher than the clouds. As you go higher the climate becomes colder. A plateau is an elevated flat land. It is a flat topped table land standing above the surrounding area. A plateau may have one or more sides with steep stoops. Plains are large stretches of flat land. They are generally not more than 200 meters above mean sea level. Some plains are extremely level others may be slightly rolling and undertaking. Due to the rotation of the earth we have different climates. I love the earth I am grateful for the world and I love the world very much.

ENVIRONMENT

ENVIRONMENT
Environment is our basic life support system. It provides the air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat and the land where we life. Land, water, air, plants and animals comprise the natural environment. Human beings interact with the environment and modify it according to their need. Early human adapted themselves to the natural requirements from the nature around them. With time needs grew and became more worried. Human learn new ways to use and change environment. They learn to grow crops, domesticate animals and lead a settled life.

Change of climate and human interferences can cause the loss of natural habitats for the plants and animals. Constructional activities, forest fires, tsunami and landslides are some of the human made and natural factors which together accelerate the process of extinction of these great natural resources. The animals are poached for collection and illegal trade of animal for business purpose. So we united should work towards saving our environment .

A TREE

A TREE
A tree is known by its fruit. A tree has roots, a trunk, branches, leaves, flowers and fruits. Roots grow under the ground, the roots help the tree to hold on to the soil. The roots help the tree to absorb water and minerals from the soil.
The truck grows above the ground. The branches grow out of the trunk. Leaves and flowers grow on branches. A tree needs a lot of sunlight to prepare its food. Flowers grow into fruits. Seeds grow inside the fruits. When the seeds are sown, they grow into new plants. Trees give us fruits and vegetables besides medicines. Trees are used for firewood and for making furniture. Trees give us Oxygen which is necessary. Birds makes nests on trees and animals live under the shadow of trees.
Due to deforestation there is decline in surviving of birds and animals. So we must grow more trees.

CLEAN ENVIRONMENT

CLEAN ENVIRONMENT

Make Goa a safe place to live in with a clean environment. There are a countless number of tourists and other people who visit Goa for various reasons. For them Goa is a place with beautiful and golden beaches, various religious places and cultural heritages which are worth seeing. Pollution and Garbage are two major problems faced by the people in Goa.  The beaches are stinking as they are littered with plastic as well as paper waste all around.
Almost along every roadside, every barren land one can see clumps and dumps of garbage and solid waste can be seen. Plastic waste is just about everywhere. Our forests are being depleted, our waters polluted due to various reasons. This is taking a toll on the environment. We have to work together to save our environment and make our Goa a better place with cleanliness being the main objective.

MY FAVOURITE SUBJECT

MY FAVOURITE SUBJECT

My favorite subject is Mathematics. It is my favorite because I never have any difficulty with it and I always get good marks. I suppose, I am lucky to be born with a clear – thinking brain. So ever since young, numbers and figures came easy to me. The wonderful things about Mathematic are that, besides some formulae there is nothing else to remember. Every step in solving a problem is done logically, where as other subjects like history and Geography require a lot of memory work. Remembering dates and other facts is hard work compared with the ease and simplicity of Mathematical reasoning.
While mathematics is simple to me, some of my friends have great difficulties with it. I do not really understand and why they get stuck with simple problems and often give up. So I help them when I can. The one advantage I have is being good in mathematics is that I do not have to spend a lot of time on it. Homework and tests are so easy. So, I have plenty of time to study other subjects. Sometimes I feel sorry for my less fortunate classmates who get scolded in class for not completing their mathematics homework. Anyhow I have come to know that human beings can be different in their abilities while they look similar otherwise some of us are lucky to be good in some things while others may not be so lucky.

OUR EXPERIENCE AT OLD GOA FOR ANNUAL RETREAT

A three days Annual retreat was held at Old Goa for the students of St. Thomas Girls’ High school student from X A and X B. A total of 55 catholic and non-Catholics students participated in this retreat.  The theme for the retreat was “SHINE AS STARS AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE” . It was held from 16th to 18th Aug 2012. Father further enlightened more about the theme. The main organizers were the priest from Old Goa who also  spoke for the retreat.  Two of our school teachers  accompanied us during  our Retreat. On our arrival, we were given warm welcome by Fr. Kelvin  and his team and he also informed us about the whole retreat followed by Tea break. We were further divided into groups and we had a tour to Old Goa. Late in the evening after our dinner we watched the movie Helen Keller and on the following day we watched another short movie the ‘Miracle worker’.
Our three days were tight scheduled. Our session included Personality development, career guidance Leadership and many more. In our Personality development session the priest explained that in order to give our best to the world we must discover our own talents and be sure of our capabilities. Fr. Patricio taught  us about new innovative ways to pray as well as methods of concentrating  while praying.
On the second day we got up early at 6.00 am and got ready for mass followed by breakfast. We then went on tour to Old Goa for which Fr.Bosco led us and explained about the Old Goa.  And a short film on life of St. Francis Xavier was shown. A lot of sessions were held in between. We also had a tour to the Basilica  and saw the Museum.
On the third and the final day we had confession and counseling followed by mass and we had a special prayer and later we left for home. We had a wonderful  experience to  remember at Old Goa. We wondered how fast those three days passed by. Some of the girls even started singing the theme songs while coming home. It was great retreat and we got a lot to learn. The videos we watched were very inspirational and informative.

We were very glad for having being given  the opportunity to attend this retreat. The knowledge and spiritual wisdom imparted by the priest can truly have a great impact in our lives. After the end of the retreat we were told that life would have many hardships and tribulations but we would have to master the courage to face all these and go ahead through prayer the mightiest weapon of all. Each student got their own little message from the retreat and various aspects of the retreat struck different students. All the students also thanked the priest for all their efforts and a safe spiritual retreat. The food was delicious and the stay was very comfortable and peaceful. We finally thank the school headmistress, Management and the staffs for having given the opportunity to attend the wonderful spiritual  retreat. God bless you.
